Regular Eye Exams can Identify Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) and Diabetic Macular Edema (DME)

Updated: Oct 22, 2021

The #1 Cause of Vision Impairment in Adults

Many patients are aware that diabetes is associated with vision impairment. But many of these patients may not know they have diabetes until diagnosed with DR. The idea that they are at risk of vision impairment is all too real. 1 in 3 adults over the age of 40 with diabetes may develop DR . Eye specialists are in a unique position to help by encouraging at-risk patients to get regular eye exams and referring appropriate patients to a retina specialist. These precautionary steps can be a vital player in a patient's journey to help slow the progression of DR and lessen the likelihood of developing DME.

Dr.Sally's Tip:

Patients should undergo a comprehensive eye exam with dilation soon after a diagnosis of DR or DME and receive annual follow-up examinations.
